New restoration of Roman glass vessels from Bogazköy-Hattusha

Among the many objects that were newly restored and preserved for the 2012 exhibition were two Roman glass vessels - a turquoise jug (1-232-72) and a greenish flat bowl (1-223-75). Both objects were in poor condition: the surface was dirty, the bonds were poorly executed, and several of them had already dissolved.

  • Surface cleaning with ethanol

  • Cleaning the joints with acetone / dissolving old bonds

  • new composition of the shards with dextrin strips

  • Infiltration bonding with Araldite 2020 epoxy resin

In the case of the shell, no stability could be achieved with the adhesive. The flaws were therefore supplemented with slightly colored Araldite 2020. A special silicone sleeve with a plaster cap was made for this.
